TIPS TO PREVENT SEPARATION ANXIETY
Separation anxiety is a common issue that many dog owner’s face with their furry friend. Doodles, like many other social breeds may be prone to it. However, you as the owner, can help prevent for your dog from developing separation anxiety. Below are some tips to help.
Create a safe place & encourage alone time
Designate a comfortable and safe space such as a crate or playpen for your puppy where they feel secure, this is where crate training comes in handy. Be sure to add a cozy bed or blanket to keep them comfortable along with a few toys to keep them occupied.
Dogs are den animals and a safe space like this may be comforting to them. Even if you trust your puppy to be left out alone, you should still make sure their crate is accessible to them. It is extremely important that you don’t use a crate as a form of punishment for them, but rather, treat it as a safe, happy place.
Gradual desensitization
Gradually increase the time you spend away from your dog by leaving and returning multiple times throughout the day without making a big fuss. Start with short intervals and gradually extend them. This helps your dog understand that your departures are not permanent and reduces anxiety. This will help them get used to be alone without feeling overwhelmed.
Calm departures and arrivals
While its always exciting returning home to your pup, you should avoid making a big fuss when you leave or get back home. Keep your greetings low-key to prevent heightened emotions. This will help normalize you coming and going.
Provide adequate physical and mental stimulation
Ensure your dog gets enough physical exercise and mental stimulation. This can be done by engaging in playtime, going for walks, and/or mental exercises like puzzle toys or a training session. A tired and mentally stimulated dog is less likely to exhibit anxiety behaviors.
