Aust Cavs - Family FAQ

AUSTRALIAN CAVOODLES - WHAT ARE OWNERS SAYING?

Its no secret that Australian Cavoodles are a relatively new cross, which means there isn’t a ton of information out there about them. So, we decided to send out a survey to everyone who has gotten one from us to help offer even more insight! Below are the questions and responses we received!

DO THEY SHED?

On a scale of 0-5, we only received 0s and 1s which means that they are very low to non-shedding! Some did say that they saw some shedding in their puppy coats, but as adults, they only see a few hairs here and there or when brushing, but that’s it!

ARE THEY GOOD WITH STRANGERS?

All except two said that their Australian Cavoodle loves everyone which is no surprise based on their parent breeds.

With this question, it is important to remember that socialization is key and should begin at a very young age. It actually begins here, with us! However, it is ongoing and very important that it is continued. Be sure to check out our blog post with helpful socialization tips!

DO THEY BARK A LOT?

With this question, answers were a bit all over the place. A few said yes, a few said not at all, but most said sometimes (ie when they see something outside, someone is at the door, etc).

All dogs bark, but some breeds are more prone than others. In conclusion, they are not a yappy breed, but that doesn’t mean they won’t bark.

HOW ENERGETIC ARE THEY?

This was also scaled from 0-5 with a majority answering 3 or 4. It was mentioned that they had that classic “puppy energy” and were more energetic then vs now.

With their moderate energy level, most enjoy a few short walks a day, playing in the yard, and their puzzle games/kong toys/etc.

DO THEY REQUIRE A LOT OF EXERCISE?

For the most part the answer was no, they do not require a lot of exercise. This doesn’t mean that they don’t require exercise at all, they do. Going for a walk, a few games of fetch, playing with another dog, etc are all needed daily to keep them happy and healthy. I will add a few of the comments we received below to help give you a better idea of how much exercise this breed needs.

We walk everyday about 45 minutes. He loves it and could go more. But he’s satisfied the rest of the day.”

“They both love being outside and playing. They play a lot together and will race around the yard, disc golf, or go on walks at least once a day.”

“Not really…playing together in back yard or a short walk & and a few min of fetch”

“No. I do take him to the dog park several times a week”

“Not a ton of exercise but we get outside and play fetch in the yard at least 30 min a day when we can and that seems to be a sufficient amount for him.”

“He is happiest with a mile walk around the neighborhood daily but is content with some fetch in the back yard”

“I would say he requires moderate exercise-like a walk a day. He could definitely do more if you wanted, but he seems pretty content with his walks! :)”

HOW LIKELY ARE YOU TO CHOOSE THIS BREED OVER ANOTHER?

On another scale from 0-5, all except one person answered 5 meaning that they are highly likely to choose the Australian Cavoodle over another breed!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THEIR TEMPERAMENT?

Below are some of the comments we received to this question!

“Chip is the sweetest, most loving and playful dog. He loves to play with other dogs, but loves to cuddle too. Walks are his favorite, but he doesn't go crazy if he misses a walk once in awhile. He is the best dog-great with kids!”

“Playful, he’s really my little shadow follows me around the house, affectionate, loves to snuggle”

“Very chill most of the time. He loves other people and dogs and gets very excited when he is around them.”

“Super sweet, chill, playful, smart, loves to cuddle”

“He is very friendly with people and other dogs. He is great with kids”

“Sweet, loving, friendly, cuddly, fun, a good balance between chill and chaos.”

“Intelligent, eager to please, sleeps through the night plus 4 naps per day, occasional energy spurts, spurts of barking and biting (gnawing actually) but easily being trained not to, good companion that loves to go for rides, recently discovered rides with head out window, Can go places before nap time and sleep for hours in loud social situation with owner. Very intelligent and very easily trainable with focus and consistency. Loves to please and gnaw.”

“Very loving. Always wants to be with us. By us.”

ANYTHING YOU THINK PEOPLE MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THEM?

Below are some of the comments we received to this question!

“Beautiful, loving puppy. So intelligent and easy to train. So many complements on how beautiful and well behaved he is.”

“We love this breed so much! Our family has a bernedoodle, and an Australian labradoodle from you and while both are great... The Australian Cavoodles are just amazing in their temperament, coats, and adorableness.”

“He is very sweet! His personality matches his cuteness. He is smart and was super easy to potty train.”

“They truly are the sweetest breed ever and very easily trained for the most part. It might just be my dog but he is very easily distracted by birds, squirrels, rabbits, etc and it’s very hard to get his attention when he is focused on those things. That’s been my only issue with him at all. Potty training, kennel training, manners have all went better than I ever expected them to. He is a very smart boy and love him so much.”

“These dogs are extremely emotionally intelligent, like little sponges. Would do best in homes where they don’t have to be left alone all day their people are their whole worlds. They are extremely funny dogs and make us laugh everyday. I really can’t say enough good things about them!”

“They are the cutest most loving and wonderful dogs. I am so glad we got this breed and we get questions everywhere we go about what kind of dog he is and where did we get him. He is a rockstar around our neighborhood! :)”

Please keep in mind that this was a small survey only sent out to our past puppy families and we did not receive answers from everyone. This was purely to help give those interested in this cross more insight from owners rather than just me. :)
