5 TIPS FOR TAKING YOUR DOG BOATING

If you follow us on social media, then you’ve probably seen tons of pictures with some of our pups at the lake! During th

e summer, we love going out on the boat, jetskis, or just hanging out on the docks. Here are some tips to help introduce your dood to the “lake life”.

SHOULD MY DOODLE WEAR A LIFE JACKET

Buy Them a Life Jacket

Just like you, your dog should also have a life jacket for their own safety! Even dogs that are strong swimmers should have one just in case. Be sure that it fits correctly (snug but not too tight) and that you introduce them to wearing it before going out on the water.

Proper Introduction

Docks: Even the most sturdy docks can be a little wobbly so let your pup walk across at their own pace.

Boat: Let your dog get familiar with the boat before taking them out on the water.

Water: Ideally, you should know whether or not your dog likes the water. If they don’t, then this “fun” outing may end up being extremely stressful for them.

Shade

Make sure that your dog has a place to get out of the sun to keep your pup from overheating. This is where a bimini top may come in handy, but if you don’t have one, other built in compartments may provide ample shade.

It is important that you’re able to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and are able to keep a close eye on your “dood”.

Have Plenty of Fresh Drinking Water

When you go out on the boat, I bet you pack a cooler full of some of your favorite drinks. Right? Well don’t forget about your 4-legged friend! Being out in the heat all day is sure to make them thirsty and it is not recommended to let them drink lake or sea water. Be sure to pack fresh water and a bowl for your pup!

SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR DOODLE TO THE LAKE

Have a Spot for Potty Breaks

Your pup is sure to have to relieve themselves a few times throughout your boat ride. Make sure to bring a leash and potty bags in case you need to make a pitstop!

This may not be for everyone, but at our lake, there aren’t many places for us to stop unless we are planning on swimming the pups to the shore. Personally, we let our dogs use the lilypad and clean it off right away, but another option is to make them a potty station on the boat (ie potty pads or a small piece of turf).
