DO BERNEDOODLES LIKE TO SWIM?
First, let’s start with a little background. Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle - two very different breeds. While Bernese can swim and may enjoy the water, they don’t typically swim, probably due to their thick, heavy build. Poodles on the other hand do like to swim! Did you know that Poodles were originally bred to retrieve and hunt?
In general, Bernedoodles do like to swim, but each dog is different. If you plan to take your furry friend with you to the water; whether its a beach, lake, pool, etc; then I highly recommend introducing them to it at an early age. Be sure to always keep it fun and a positive experience!
TIPS FOR TEACHING YOUR BERNEDOODLE TO SWIM
Start slowly by introducing your Bernedoodle to shallow water so they can touch the bottom.
Never force your dog into the water. Instead, try luring them with a treat or toy.
Once your dog is confident in shallow water, slowly introduce them to deeper water. A life vest may be helpful at first!
Make sure the water isn’t too cold.
Teach your dog in a safe environment.
Always keep it a fun and positive experience!

A: Don’t worry! You don’t need a large body of water to get them used to it. Start by filling up your bathtub for them!

A: In general, a pool that is well-maintained is safe for dogs to swim in, but there are a few things to remember:
Drinking pool water can upset their gastrointestinal tract
Pool chemicals can be harsh on their skin and coat so it is important to rinse them off afterwards
