COCKAPOO VS CAVAPOO
CAVAPOO VS. COCKAPOO - WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
While these teddy bear-ish doodles might look and even act similar, they are two completely different breeds! Both of course crossed with a Poodle.
A Cavapoo is a cross of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. You may also see them referred to as a Cavoodle or a Cavadoodle.
A Cockapoo is a cross of a Cocker Spaniel (either American or English) and a Poodle. They may also be referred to as Cockerpoos.
TEMPERAMENT
Cavapoos and Cockapoos are fairly similar in terms of their personalities and temperaments. They tend to have bubbly, happy go lucky personalities and are gentle and affectionate.
Cockapoos tend to be more energetic compared to the Cavapoo who is relatively more calm.
Cockapoos are also known to be more prone to separation anxiety and tend to be more vocal.
Both are friendly and social breeds that like to be around their people. Both breeds do better when they are not left alone for long periods of time.
TRAINABILITY
In general, Cavapoos tend to be easier to train. That isn’t to say that Cockapoos are necessarily hard to train, but they may require you having a little more patience.
EXERCISE REQUIREMENTS
Generally speaking, the Cockapoo will require a little more exercise. They tend to be more energetic and are prone to becoming obese.
Both will require daily mental and physical stimulation. Physical can typically be met with going for a walk, playing a game of fetch, etc and mental stimulation can come in the form of Kong treats, games, etc.
COAT TYPES
Another similarity in the two breeds is their coat types - the most popular being either wavy or curly. They can also be unfurnished, though you don’t see it as often. An unfurnished Cavapoo or Cockapoo would have a coat similar to their non-Poodle parent, rather than having a “doodle coat”. You can read more about furnished vs non-furnished coats on our blog post here - https://www.doodlesofoz.com/blog/2022/11/9/furnished-vs-unfurnished-whats-the-difference.
Below are some pictures of Cavapoo puppies with the 3 different coat types.
grooming requirements
Both the Cavapoo and Cockapoo require regular grooming. They should be brushed often to keep their coats free from tangles and mats. If you prefer a longer coat or have a pup with a more curly coat, then you should expect to brush your pup daily. In general, it is recommended to have them groomed every 6-8 weeks. This can be done by a groomer or you can learn to do it at home. It is after all, a great way to bond with your dog!
SIZE
The biggest determining factor of their sizes is based on their parents and their genetics, especially since one parent is a Poodle which comes in several different sizes.
In general, the Cavapoo will weigh between 8-25lbs as an adult.
Cockapoos also fall in this range for the most part, but they are placed in four different size categories-
Teacup Cockapoos weigh less than 7lbs and under 10in tall.
Toy Cockapoos weigh less than 12lbs and is around 10in tall. They are considered to have a more “sturdy” build compared to the teacup Cockapoos.
Mini Cockapoos weigh between 13-18lbs and are generally 11-14in tall.
Standard Cockapoos are over 19lbs and 15in tall.
HOW ARE THEY WITH KIDS?
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that these fun, loving pups are good with children and make great family pets.
As mentioned above, Cockapoos tend to have a higher energy level, so if your children are energetic or more active, then a Cockapoo may be the better choice for you!
DO THEY DO WELL IN APARTMENTS?
Due to their small size and lower exercise requirements, both breeds do well in apartment life.
