DOODLE GENERATIONS

DOODLE GENERATIONS EXPLAINED

At Doodles of Oz we raise several doodle breeds. However, for this, we are just going to use Bernedoodles as our example. Doodles can come in several generations including F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, F2b, and multigenerational.

WHAT IS AN F1?

what is an F1 Bernedoodle

An F1 Bernedoodle is the result of crossing the two original parent breeds. For example, an F1 Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are a mix of 50% Poodle and 50% Bernese. Most reputable Bernedoodle breeders will only cross a standard or moyen Poodle with a Bernese. Crossing a toy or mini Poodle with a Bernese often results in Bernedoodles with short legs and a longer body (like a Corgi).

WHAT IS AN F1B?

An F1b Bernedoodle is the result of crossing an F1 Bernedoodle back to a Poodle. F1b Bernedoodles are a mix of 25% Bernese and 75% Poodle. They are not to be confused with a “Reverse” F1b Bernedoodle which is result of crossing an F1 Bernedoodle back to a Bernese Mountain Dog.

WHAT IS AN F1BB?

An F1bb Bernedoodle is the result of crossing an F1b Bernedoodle back to full bred Poodle. F1bbs have a very high percentage of Poodle (over 75%) and tend to take mostly after the Poodle because of this.

WHAT IS AN F2?

An F2 Bernedoodle comes from crossing an F1 Bernedoodle and another F1 Bernedoodle. They are typically very close to 50% Bernese and 50% Poodle, however, not all puppies in the litter will receive the exact same traits and some may have more of one of the breeds.

WHAT IS AN F2b?

An F2b Bernedoodle is a cross between an F2 Bernedoodle (explained above) back to a Poodle. They are typically close to 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese.

WHAT IS AN MULTIGEN?

what is a multigen bernedoodle

A multigenerational (or multigen) Bernedoodle is the result of combining two of the above generations (ie an F1 bred to an F2 or an F1b bred to another F1b) or breeding two multigens to each other. Their percentages can be a mixture leaning towards either parent breed. When reputable breeders carefully plan and study their lines, multigens tend to be the most predictable generation when it comes to temperament, coat type, shedding factor, etc.
