FURNISHED VS NOT
FURNISHED VS UNFURNISHED
Doodles, no matter their cross, are so unique, especially when it comes to their coats! I am sure you’ve seen the terms, “furnished” and “unfurnished”, or maybe even the letters FF, F/IC, or IC/IC.
FF refers to a dog that is full furnished.
F/IC refers to a dog that is furnished, but only carries one copy of the furnishing gene.
IC/IC refers to a dog that has an improper coat; also known as unfurnished.
When you think of a Doodle, you probably think of that cute, teddy bear look! You might be surprised to know that not all doodles have that. Furnishings refer to a dog’s coat and are responsible for giving them the beard and fluffiness.
WHAT IS A FURNISHED DOODLE?
Furnished doodles have longer facial hair and have that fluffy, sometimes scruffy, “doodle” coat. Those doodles that have that teddy bear look are furnished doodles. Furnished doodles are typically good for allergy suffers.
WHAT IS AN UNFURNSIHED DOODLE?
An unfurnished doodle refers to a doodle that has an improper coat and does not have coat furnishings. They do not have the beard and “fluffiness” that most doodles have. Unfurnished doodles have a smooth face (rather than beard) and look more like their non-Poodle parent breed.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF AN UN-FURNISHED DOODLE?
There are several different advantages of having an unfurnished Bernedoodle. Especially if you love the Bernese Mountain Dog!
Longer Lifespan: Bernese Mountain Dogs tend to have a very short lifespan of 6-8 years. However, when adding the Poodle to the mix, they tend to live 10-12+ years. Minis typically live even longer!
Different Sizes: There are several different sizes to chose from including micro mini, mini, medium, and standard Bernedoodles. This means that they can be as small be <10lbs but also >100lbs! A perfect size for everyone!
Easier to Maintain: Due to the fact that they have the “unfurnished” coat, they do not require the typical grooming that a doodle does. Like the Bernese Mountain Dog, they do still need regular brushing and baths, but they do not need shaved, clipped, etc.
DO UNFURNISHED BERNEDOODLES SHED?
One disadvantage (for some) is that unfurnished Bernedoodles are more likely to shed than one that is furnished. However, they do tend to shed less than the average Bernese.
If you love the look of the Bernese Mountain Dog but their longevity, large size, or coat maintenance have you second guessing, then an unfurnished Bernedoodle may be perfect for you.. The best of both worlds!
